The well-preserved great hall is one of the best examples of Baroque architecture not only in Estonia but also in the whole Northern Europe. Besides Russian and Italian artists, masters from Stockholm, Riga and Tallinn took part in its building work. The two-storied hall is decorated with rich stucco work and ceiling paintings.

The territory of the museum is divided into four parts of corresponding typical village types: Western Estonia, Northern Estonia, Southern Estonia and the islands. In each region farmyards of different wealth and age stand in the central position. There are twelve farmyards exhibited today. In order to create a true rural milieu, a church, an inn, a schoolhouse, several mills, a fire station and netsheds on the coast have also been transferred to the museum.
